How To: DIY Decor for Your Home
Creating the right decor pieces for your home can be tricky. Be patient, and make a plan.
I’m not very patient. Yep, I admit it. And that’s the number one thing I struggle with as a designer.
I’m a mom, and time is limited. I’m also a creative - and often have a long list of projects I want to accomplish. However, the times I have been most successful were when I had a plan.
You don't need to spend hours and hours on making a plan - because sometimes you just need to get going. But, spending a few minutes to map out your project will help it run smoothly.
Here’s the general outline I follow for projects - I hope it helps get you started too:
Find inspiration. I use Pinterest, design books from the library, and items I find at the thrift store.
Decide if you want to recreate or duplicate. Honestly I have no problem copying when it comes to design. I truly believe you end up putting your own spin on it regardless. As long as you’re not directly copying and using that for profit- just do it! (the above image is a project I copied that I saw on Pinterest)
Make a list of the supplies you’ll need to create your project. Get these things together the day before so you can focus on execution on the day of.
Execute! Now, you’ve got your inspiration and your supplies - time to get started! Make sure you are gentle with yourself, and embrace mistakes. Also, give yourself enough time to complete it the way you want it; even if that means taking a break.
Happy creating!
